charlie brown

i took down my christmas tree. his name is charlie brown after the movie a charlie brown christmas... see, in that christmas story, charlie brown gets exasperated by the commercial corruption of his friends & family. at a local tree market, charlie brown finds a fledgling tree which, ironically & symbolically, is the only real living tree on the lot. with everyone around him falling pray to commercialism, charlie starts to wonder if he really knows what christmas is about... linus hears charlie brown & quietly says he can tell him. linus walks to the center of their christmas play stage & under a spotlight, linus quotes luke 2:8-14...

"and there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. an angel of the Lord appeared to them, & the glory of the Lord shone around them, & they were terrified. but the angel said to them, "do not be afraid. i bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. today in the town of david a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord. this will be a sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God & saying, "glory to God in the highest, & on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

charlie realizes he does not have to let commercialism ruin his christmas & with newfound inspiration, he picks up the little tree & walks out of the auditorium, intending to take the tree home to decorate it & show the others it will work in their christmas play...

until next year charlie. many great nights of reading next to the christmas tree.
